I was sitting in an art marketing meeting yesterday listening to artists ask questions about marketing. When I asked what they had in place I heard a reoccurring theme. They all were waiting to promote their websites until everything was in place. That’s like saying you’re going to wait to have a baby until you have enough money. You will never get there.
I heard the words of advice come out of my mouth, “Do it now! Something is better than nothing!” If you’re waiting on a website then make a Facebook Fan page. There’s absolutely no reason you can’t start collecting names and email addresses for email marketing. Don’t have enough work to market; go paint, photograph, or create!
Then it occurred to me…I’ve been doing the same thing with this blog. I’ve been so wrapped up in trying to figure out and narrow down good content I haven’t written anything.
So, you don’t have to build Rome in a day, but you do have to start somewhere. People can’t find you if they don’t know about you. Go do one thing that is proactive today. Something is better than nothing.
