I had a 5 hour drive so I figured I would get in a short adventure today. I found Mattheison State Park on the map and read positive things. It rained all night, and off and on all morning. The weather was perfect; 70’s, low humidity, light rain off and on. The weather just meant no tourists. The trails were all mine!
I didn’t have a map going in. I looked on my phone and the website didn’t offer a map but said that the trails were clearly marked at each intersection. I covered myself in bug spray, put on my water pack (even though it was low) and hit the trail. For about the first two miles it was gorgeous. The next mile started to get a little muddy. By the fourth mile I realized I was lost. I have no sense of direction and there were no trail indicators. I was totally winging it. I wanted to start heading back since I still had several hours to drive. I twisted and turned down the paths. I realized I was completely lost. Soon I saw my muddy footprints in the tracks I was going down. I had already came down these paths.
I won’t lie, I got a little nervous. My water ran out and it was getting dark. By the time I started to see my footprints on the trail going both ways I knew I was screwed. I finally took a chance and took a path that had no footprints. I knew I hadn’t been there and I had already passed it twice. I decided I had nothing to lose. It came out of the trees into a clearing. I just kept walking. Eventually I hit the main road. My car was no where to be found but at least I was out of the woods (pun intended). I found my car about 1/2 mile away up the road.
This trip turned out to be quite the adventure. This weekend I will be buying a portable water filter and start downloading maps to my phone before hikes. And the adventures roll on….
