Fishing on Father’s Day seemed like an appropriate adventure for today. Last year was a rough year. My step-dad was diagnosed with throat cancer and he was very sick while he went through treatment. We weren’t very close when I was growing up as many step situations are. Once he got cancer though, things changed. He changed and I changed; both for the better. After a rough road, he finally beat cancer. Last year for Father’s Day he was too sick to really enjoy anything. This year, I decided to take him out.
I popped a surprise shopping trip on him. We went to a sporting store and bought fishing poles. He has many, but he wanted a new one. I bought one for my own lil’ man. Then my step-dad took me shopping for guns. I’ve been wanting a new one for awhile but don’t know enough about the differences to get the “right” one. With that settled, we picked up my mom and my lil’ man and headed to the reservoir.
My step-dad and son sat on the dock fishing together. Dad explained how to bait the hook, throw the line, take out the slack, and to reel in the fish. Lil’ man caught 7 small perch. Not bad for a first trip! It was a lot of fun and reminds me of my country roots and how much I love coming home.
