On the weekends my adventures usually involve my little man. He has been asking for about a month to go see the dinosaur bones. I had no clue what he was talking about. Then, recently, someone was telling me about the Prairie Fire Museum in Leawood, KS. I looked it up, and sure enough, there are dinosaur skeletons inside.
I took a few friends and we took my son and went. It’s a brand new museum. The building is absolutely gorgeous. The inside is full of interactive learning stations. Walking into the lobby there’s a giant screen that shows you in it, and then a dinosaur walking across the floor in front of you. If you go behind the wall, you can actually make your virtual dinosaur while learning about them.
The Discover Center was my favorite part. There are animals to touch and play wiht (snakes, hissing cockroaches, hermit crabs, etc). There’s drawers full of rocks and minerals with magnifying glasses and microscopes. They encourage the kids to touch everything. There is a fossil dig area and a small dinosaur skeleton that has magnets and is actually a puzzle for the kids to figure out. We spent most of our time in this room.
There is also currently an exhibit about water and the sustainability of water. It was very humbling. I would totally recommend anyone who has a kid going here!
