Adventure Challenge – Day 44: Kid with a Broken Arm

My poor kiddo broke his arm. I’ve never been in a cast, so it’s been a bit of an adventure figuring out what he can and can not do. I just planned a week vacation around the ocean. He fell off the monkey bars and broke his wrist the day before vacation. I scrambled to make an entirely new itinerary. I love the ocean and I was so excited to show it to my kid for the first time. I had planned swimming with dolphins and wave jumping. Fortunately he can get wet, just not in salt water.

He flew into Florida to meet me in West Palm Beach where I’ve been working all week. After a few hits to the head from a hard cast he started getting the hang of it (and I learned when to duck). They put him in an entire arm cast so he can’t bend his elbow. He insists on being independent as much as possible and as a mom it’s hard to watch him struggle.

The hardest part is watching him suffer in the Florida heat and humidity. When it gets intensely hot outside, the itching becomes nearly unbearable. He is reduced to tears and frantic begging. I feel totally helpless as a mother. I talked to a pharmacist and he suggested an antihistamine. After the first night of no sleep, I was desperate to try anything. It worked! Cold water flushes down the arm and some Zyrtec and we’re good to go! He hasn’t let it slow him down at all! That’s my kid!

About strokeofred

I am from Kansas and I have traveled all over the world. I am an artist, and I have a business brain. I love skirts and tennis shoes. I like to get dirty and ride motorcycles. I am sensitive and I can be mean. I love nature, and believe in protecting it. I love to laugh, and feel better after a good cry. I can be stubborn and impatient. I am constantly growing. I am open and free. I look to be inspired and love to inspire. I play guitar and secretly want to play drums. I have a puppy that brings me great joy. I love hugs, cuddling, holding hands...and wrestling. I love the mountains and the beach. I have to make a pilgrimage to the ocean at least twice a year to balance myself. I believe in balance in all things. Traveling is a passion, and meeting interesting people from all over the world is the perk! I have small town values, and big city dreams. I love beer, hate wine. I believe that what you put out comes back. I believe and live by the belief of treating others like you want to be treated. I enjoy stimulating conversation, and a good sense of humor. Caffeine is my drug of choice, and coffee over chess or good conversation is my luxury. I am strong but sometimes feel small. I strive to be my authentic me.
