I an in love with the ocean. I have been since the first time I saw it at the age of 19. I had barely been out of Kansas where I was born and raised. I hopped a flight to Hawaii on a whim that I needed to do something exciting with my life. The first day I arrived I went directly to the ocean. I sat in waist deep water for hours just watching all of the colorful fish swim around my legs. I felt like a small child discovering something for the first time. I was hooked. I spoke to a girl from England that told me once I got the ocean in my soul I would never get it out. She was right.
It’s rough being an Irish fair-skinned ginger Pisces mermaid from Kansas. I try to get my toes in the sand as often as a Kansas girl can. I was extremely excited to show it to my son for the first time. I decided to introduce him to the ocean at Sanibel Island in Florida. I could walk the beach for hours collecting shells. He can’t really play in the ocean because if the cast on his broken arm, but it didn’t slow him down.
He built sand castles with his one good arm and jumped into waves as they came up. He soaked himself. I had a refreshing mojito and walked along the beach searching for seashells. It sort of feels like coming home.
