I have never officially juried an art show. When I was asked I jumped at the opportunity. I was asked by a museum to jury a local art exhibit. The work was all very different so the works were judged on certain criteria. There were 10 questions, all answered with a ranking system from 1 to 10. At the end the numbers would be added to calculate the winner. To make it fair, I was accompanied by 2 other artists who also judged.
Some of the questions were:
1) Is the work original?
2) Does the artist have control over their medium?
3) Does the composition flow?
These were all excellent questions that made me think about my own work. I think art is so completely subjective that it is hard to judge artwork. However, when you judge it based on specific points, it becomes a lot easier. It was clear that some had amazing control over their medium where others needed improvement. It made me really stand back and look at composition and where my eyes were taken throughout the picture.
The best part of judging this show was that it completely inspired me. Even though I know all of these specific points to look for in art, you tend to forget thinking about them when creating. The reminder is appreciated and the inspiration is flowing.
