I am working on saying yes more. It’s not much of a challenge when I’m on the road and everything new. It is a little more difficult when you are use to your routine.
I was approached by an art student who asked if I would give lessons to a special population. She is the head of a program that works with mentally handicapped individuals who are learning art. I have never worked with this population before but decided I would give it a try. I am so glad that I did.
I toured the facility and was truly amazed at the systems they have in place. This place serves individuals who are not capable of functioning socially or living on their own. There are paying jobs, activities, and even art provided. I was asked to work with one man who loves art. It took a bit to get him focused but once he got there, we had a great time. I was able to show him some different materials and additional techniques. In the two hours we spent together I noticed a significant difference in the way he painted.
When asked if he learned anything from me at the end of the class, he remarked that he learned a lot and listed off several things. It warmed my heart that I could help someone in such a way with art. I look forward to doing more work in the near future.
